Three local firefighters from Sorrento have gone missing after going on a fishing trip late yesterday, on what has been reported the coldest August night in the state for 23 years.
According to the Victorian Bureau of Meteorology, last night’s air temperature was zero and the water temperature was four degrees Celsius. Bureau spokesperson Hayden Grewsome claimed, “It was the kind of weather that kills people.”
Police were alerted about the disappearance of Mr Fred Smith, Mr John Taylor and Mr Bill Smith at 4am last night, and a search party was at work at dawn. “We hold grave fears for them.” Said Inspector Rod Cathall of Victoria Police, leader of the rescue search.
The three men were reported to have been in a fibreglass runabout. They were all senior members of the local tennis club, due to play in the tennis finals next Saturday. The men were due back at midnight last night.
